DESCRIPTION:NCEJN Family Reunion: Remembering\, Recovering\, Resisting\, Reimagining\nFriday October 14th to Saturday October 15th\nWhitakers\, North Carolina \nREGISTER TODAY! \nIn 1997\, following a meeting of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Committee (NEJAC) at North Carolina Central University (Durham\, NC)\, a few concerned citizens\, activists\, academicians\, and attorneys gathered to discuss forming a committee to address Environmental Justice (EJ) issues in North Carolina. \nIt became evident that an Environmental Justice Summit was needed solely to address the environmental degradation suffered by poor communities and communities of color in NC. The ground work was laid for the First Annual NCEJN Summit. \nAfter that initial meeting\, additional concerned individuals\, organizations\, and state agencies were invited to help plan and support the Summit. The NCEJ Network grew out of the 1st Annual NC Community Environmental Justice Summit held in 1998 at the Historical Franklinton Center at Bricks in Whitakers\, NC. \nOver the years\, the format has shifted to include listening panels\, academic presentations and other activities as appropriate. With this being our first in-person Summit in two years\, we decided to focus on connection and community foregoing some of those aspects but maintaining the goal of building power and paving the way forward.

They are known to be toxic in drinking water; many\, including PFOA\, PFOS and GenX have been linked to several types of cancers\, reproductive problems\, low-birth weight and thyroid disorders\, among other serious health conditions. They are known as “forever chemicals” because the don’t break down in the environment. Chemours is responsible for contaminating the Lower Cape Fear River Basin with GenX\, which is present in the drinking water — both public and private — of hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians. \nChemours will increase its production of PFA for use in the semiconductor industry\, according to a press release. It is the only U.S. producer of PFA. \nOn Sept. 20 and 21\, Chemours will hold two public information sessions about its expansions plans. It is still unclear how the company will produce greater amounts of PFA and still comply with discharge and emissions limits that are laid out in the consent order with the state and Cape Fear River Watch. For example\, Chemours is required to limit its air emissions of perfluorinated compounds by 99%. The company is also building an underground barrier wall to keep the compounds out of the river. Until the wall is complete\, compounds will continue to enter the Cape Fear\, albeit in sharply reduced amounts.

DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)’s Division of Water Resources will hold four public meetings in April on draft Animal Waste Management Digester System General Permits. Three meetings will be in-person and a fourth will be online via Webex. Members of the public are invited to attend and submit comments on the draft permits. \nClean Water for NC Talking Points to Help Give Comment! \nThe three draft General Permits cover the installation and operation of digester systems at existing swine\, cattle and wet poultry operations. The Digester System General Permit drafts are available online. Permits will be finalized by June 30\, 2022\, as directed by statute. \nDEQ is conducting these meetings as part of its commitment to a transparent public engagement process during the development of the general permits. During this process\, the Department held two technical stakeholder workgroup meetings and a virtual public input session in late 2021.
